It’s not that you can’t have a portable recorder or even your phone you can hum into but having the sequencer/piano roll patterns on a DAW-like app is way easier and more comfortable to do, giving you an idea of how things sound and work out straight on the spot. That was until apps like the ones on this list became a reality. Unlike writing lyrics, musical notation can be tough to record on any medium you might have laying around you in the grocery store. Being a hobbyist one myself, I can claim for anyone who has had a sudden epiphany-like idea spring into life in the middle of nowhere, writing it down on a scrap of paper can be not only uncomfortable but impossible. However, having a means of just laying down some groove, melody or rhythm pattern on the go can be priceless for a musician. Taking a laptop out with you can be better, in orders of magnitude but a laptop won’t fit in your pocket and won’t last a day on a single battery charge. Speaking of music production on the go, this is sort of an unfair way to call the use of these apps since it is pretty obvious that you cannot have a fulfilling experience when attempting to compose something on your phone or tablet.
